Have a Heart to Answer the Covid Wake-up Call

Inflammation - Unmasking the Culprit by Kiki Macdonald

The latest findings among top researchers indicate that high blood sugar worsens the outcome of those infected with the Corona Virus leading to greater complications, even death. What does this mean and what can we do about it?

Chronic disease is at an all time high throughout the world and across the United States especially. Chronic inflammation is the culprit. Chronic inflammation will eventually bring you to your knees. First let's start with diet. The food you put in your body will have a direct result on your health. You might say you eat what you want and you are the poster child of good health, but at what point do you make the change? Do you wait for bad health to catch up to you before doing something about it? Please read on.

The presence of the Standard American Diet (SAD/ aka Western Diet) is wreaking havoc on all communities, all sexes, all ethnicities and all socio-economic groups. The average person in America consumes way too much sugar, with a majority of the blame being put on products that are no more than just a heap of "processed" sugar - JUNK FOOD! We are not only talking cakes, cookies and candy, but things like yogurt, fruit drinks and sodas, catsup and bread have sugar lurking around every corner of your day. Most of us aren't even aware that we are constantly being bombarded by ads, potlucks and downright tricky food labels that are smartly packaged to deceive the consumer. Here are some key words to look for in the list of ingredients:

  • brown sugar

  • corn sweetener

  • corn syrup

  • fruit juice concentrates

  • high-fructose corn syrup

  • honey

  • invert sugar

  • malt sugar

  • molasses

  • syrup sugar molecules ending in "ose" (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose).

Of course we DO need inflammation for survival, "acute" inflammation that is. When we sprain our ankle for example, our body creates a buffer of inflammation to protect the injury by stabilizing the injury site. Inflammation also warns us of the injury or the invader, telling us to protect, rest or treat the problem. Our brilliantly designed human vessels come equip with an alarm system that tells us it's time to get into healing mode.

Chronic inflammation, on the other hand is down-right evil. Diet and lifestyle factors can breed the pest that overstays its welcome, by causing disfunction in the body that leads to damage and disease. Before the presence of Covid, there are an estimated 100,000,000 people in the U.S. with high blood sugar and/or type 2 diabetes. That is almost a staggering 1/3 of our population. By 2025 it is estimated to be at 1/2!! THATS ONE OUT OF EVERY TWO PEOPLE!!

What are some other key lifestyle factors that contribute to chronic inflammation?

  • sedentary (lack of exercise)

  • poor sleep (lack of quality)

  • dehydration (lack of water)

  • stress (lack of downtime or coping skills)

  • vitamin/ mineral/ omega 3 deficiencies (lack of nutrient dense foods)

Here's the big picture. If this is our baseline, what happens when we come face to face with Covid 19?

To keep it simple enough for most of you to head the warning and let it sink in, the Corona virus, enters the body and creates replicators to its surroundings, to put it simply. The inflammatory response can be greatly exaggerated based on the current condition of our underlying health. In other words, if your body is in a state of chronic inflammation as we talked about above, then persons testing positive for Covid will experience a much greater inflammatory response. This is what's noted as a cytokine storm. It can and certainly will reach many as a category 5 hurricane, leaving much damage and destruction as possible. What can you do to get more prepared for the storm if it’s coming your way?

One thing is for sure. You can start at this very moment to make some necessary changes. Put your kitchen remodel aside and perhaps renovate your refrigerator and food pantry contents. Here are some suggestions:

  • Stock up on veggies, veggies and more veggies (shop the perimeter of the store)

  • Eat some fruit (be careful not to overdo it)

  • Throw out the junk oils (stick to extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, grass fed butter, coconut oil to name a few)

  • Get into fermented foods (your gut will love you)

  • Say no to soda, sugary smoothies, fruit juices, flavored creamers. (There are replacements out there, but be sure to check the labels)

  • Don't over eat

  • Invest in grass fed/finished meats, free range eggs and wild-caught fish

  • Fill your plate with mostly veggies

  • Most nutritious food come without a label. Here's a good rule of thumb, "If it has a label, read the label." Make an educated choice, you're worth it!

This is the most important article I have ever written and I aim to do more to enlighten my friends, family and strangers. This pandemic will more than likely be around for a long time. We can't be certain that this virus won't come our way unless you plan on sheltering in a bubble forever. Take all the advised precautions by wearing a mask when appropriate, keep hands washed and maintain a safe distance from others. BUT PLEASE, I implore you to take a good look at your current diet and lifestyle. Are you really doing all that is necessary to keep the chronic inflammation out? Are you clear on the outcome of what happens when chronic inflammation meets Corona virus? Do you realize that there is so much you CAN do to stay healthy and reduce your chances of chronic diseases like Type2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer's disease and even many forms of cancer?
